I just received an alert on my phone that my school district is closed tomorrow for the 10th snow day this year. I'm clearly not in Nebraska/Iowa/Missouri anymore. Oh, we had snow. School just rarely closed because of it. So as I watch the snow continue to fall, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite warm weather DC (Arlington, VA) spots.
A nice Place for a Picnic.
There is a beautiful green space between the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial), and one of the many entrances to Arlington National Cemetery. There you will find the Netherland Carillon Bell Tower, where beautiful flowers grow. You can also take in a fantastic view of DC that awaits just across the river at one of the many park benches. Georgie and I would visit weekly over the summer/fall. There were often families having picnics or artists painting on blankets.
I think it's also a nice starting point for a long walk (or run) or bike ride into DC. There was almost always parking in the circle that surrounds the Iwo Jima Memorial. There is a path that will lead you around the cemetery to the Arlington Metro Station (about 1/2-3/4 mile walk), or you can continue straight across the Arlington Memorial Bridge which will lead you to the Lincoln Memorial. There is also a Capital Bike Share rack near the entrance of the Iwo Jima Memorial as well (https://www.capitalbikeshare.com).
Here's to warmer days!
